Father and daughter, 3, killed after horse-drawn carriage crashes into truck

A tipper truck driver has been arrested after a father and his young daughter riding in a horse-drawn carriage were killed in a crash.

The driver’s wife is fighting for life in hospital after the crash with the construction vehicle travelling on the A228 near Tonbridge, Kent at 6.25pm.

A 29-year-old man from Kent who was driving a DAF tipper truck in the same direction as the pony and trap is in police custody.

A man in his 30s, named by family as Francis, travelling in the pony and trap was confirmed dead at the scene between the junctions of Bandridges Road and Hale Street.

A young girl and woman in the trap were taken to hospital, where the child was confirmed dead.

The pony also died at the scene.

Kent Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who saw the truck, or the pony and trap before the crash to contact 101.
