The 2026 WNBA playoffs opening round has set a new league record for viewership, averaging 1.3 million viewers across 10 games. This milestone represents a 37% increase over the 2025 postseason and a 17% rise over the previous record of 1.1 million set in 2024.
The record-breaking performance was largely propelled by the three-game series between the Indiana Fever and the Las Vegas Aces. The deciding Game 3 averaged 2.25 million viewers on USA Network, peaking at 2.7 million during the final 15 minutes of the broadcast. This audience was captured despite the game airing simultaneously with the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football” broadcast of the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cleveland Browns.
According to Nielsen data reported by Sports Media Watch, the 2.25 million average for Game 3 stands as the second-most-watched first-round game in WNBA history. It sits only behind the 2.54 million viewers who tuned in for Game 2 of the Indiana-Connecticut series in 2024.
Broadcast networks and streaming platforms saw surge in postseason viewership.
The Fever-Aces series maintained high engagement across various broadcasting platforms. Game 1, which aired on ABC, drew 2.11 million viewers, setting a network record for a WNBA playoff game. Game 2, carried exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, averaged 1.42 million viewers. These figures highlight the success of the league’s expanded distribution strategy under its current multi-platform media rights agreement, which utilizes ABC, ESPN, Amazon Prime, and NBC-affiliated networks including USA Network and CNBC.
While the Fever-Aces series provided the highest peaks, the broader first-round field also showed growth. Analysis of the 10-game stretch indicates that while Indiana games served as the primary anchor, non-Fever matchups averaged between 950,000 and 1.06 million viewers.
The 1.3 million average for the full round underscores the continued momentum of the league following the return of Caitlin Clark to the postseason. The 2026 figures successfully surpassed the 1.1 million average from the 2024 season, which previously held the title of the most-watched opening round.
