 Game of Thrones star Pilou Asbæk plays the new Mule in Foundation Season 3. He replaced Mikael Persbrandt, who portrayed the character in Season 2.

In a conversation with Radio Times.com, Asbæk revealed what the audience can expect from his portrayal of the beloved character. He insisted that he doesn’t perceive The Mule as an antagonistic character, rather thinks that he’s a “bit misunderstood.” He said, “He’s got a lot of weakness. Maybe his ego is his weakness. Power corrupts – the more power you get, the more it will corrupt you…he’s a product of other people’s decisions, if that makes sense.”

Why did Pilou Asbæk replace Mikael Persbrandt as the Mule on Foundation?

Apple TV+ hasn’t revealed an official reason as to why Asbæk took over the role of The Muse from Pershbrandt. However, Asbæk did address the recasting in the RadioTimes.com interview.

Appreciating the former The Mule actor, Asbæk said, “It’s always difficult to be in the footsteps of an incredible actor as Mikael. But us Scandinavians we stick together and we collaborate.”

He also opened up about the challenges of stepping into the shoes of a beloved character. “It’s always tricky when you’re working with something that is so loved by so many people over the world. I’ve tried it before – I did it on Game of Thrones as well. It’s a little bit tricky, but it’s also a challenge that you like,” he added.

Foundation Season 3 consists of 10 episodes, out of which three are yet to premiere on Apple TV+.
