Thunderbolts* has beaten Superman, becoming the best superhero movie of 2024 on Rotten Tomatoes, despite its poor box office performance. Directed by Jake Schreier, the movie was Marvel Studios’ second venture of the year, following Captain America: Brave New World. While it managed to impress critics, Thunderbolts*, which was made on a reported budget of $180 million, failed to break even.

Thunderbolts* is the best superhero movie of 2025 according to critics

Thunderbolts* has surpassed all the other superhero movies of this year and become the best-reviewed one on Rotten Tomatoes.

With all the superhero movies of 2025 now out in theaters, the Marvel movie has the best score on Tomatometer (via Dexerto). It has surpassed even the highest-grossing superhero venture of the year, James Gunn’s Superman, featuring David Corenswet. Superman has made over $611 million at the box office, as of now.

Thunderbolts* can also be regarded as the most successful entry by Marvel Studios this year, beating Captain America 4 and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, based on its Rotten Tomatoes score.

Here are the Rotten Tomatoes scores of superhero movies that were released this year.

Thunderbolts* – 88% The Fantastic Four: First Steps – 87% Superman – 83% The Toxic Avenger – 83% Dog Man – 81% Captain America: Brave New World – 46%

The Toxic Avenger’s Rotten Tomatoes score might change in the future as the movie hit theaters on August 29, 2025.

In its run at the box office, Thunderbolts* managed to collect over $382 million, falling behind Captain America 4’s $415 million and The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ $506 million.

While speaking about why Thunderbolts* might’ve bombed at the box office, Marvel head Kevin Feige said in a press conference in July, “Thunderbolts* was a very good movie, but nobody knew that title, and many of those characters were from shows. There was that residual effect of [audiences going], ‘I guess I had to have seen these other shows to understand who this is?'” (via Deadline)
