Even though MTV recently canceled its popular reality-based docuseries Catfish after nine seasons, hosts Nev Schulman and Max Joseph spoke about the show’s potential return in a recent social media post. Neb and Joseph developed the series with Ariel Schulman based on the 2010 documentary of the same name directed by Ariel and Henry Joost. While Nev served as the host throughout the show’s run, Joseph stepped down as host in Season 2, though he returned to serve as guest host multiple times.

Max Joseph says it is possible that Catfish is ‘just on pause’

Schulman and Joseph addressed Catfish’s cancellation in a new Instagram video. The series began airing on MTV from November 12, 2012, covering the stories of a significant number of “hopefuls” as they try to figure out whether their online romances are real or “catfish,” a term that originated from the 2010 documentary.

“After 12 years, 300 episodes, and just a lot of traveling around this incredible country, Catfish has officially been cancelled. Sorry,” Schulman stated.

Joseph, sitting beside Schulman in the video, said, “Maybe it’s just on pause,” expressing his hope that the series could return in the future. He congratulated Nev for “over a decade on cable television in this day and age.” Joseph added, “I mean this was it. This was the last decade in cable television. And you did it. With a little help from me and some other people.” He also revealed that he was planning a return to the show before its cancellation.

The pair proceeded to thank the crew behind the series and the fans. Nev continued, “Thanks to everyone who had a part in this. We are so grateful to all of you. Max, I’m so grateful to you for really being there from day one.”

Nev ended the video with the following, “If we leave you with one thing, it’s this. No matter whatever happens in your life, how someone treats you, or how angry or upset you are. Never call someone a fat a– Kelly Price.” This is a reference to a viral clip from Season 3 Episode 2 of the show.
