Brandon Sanderson has officially moved his fantasy epic Mistborn into a critical new phase of production. Speaking at FanX Salt Lake City this October, the author confirmed he has submitted his screenplay for the film adaptation to Apple TV+, marking the first formal studio hand-off for a project that has been decades in the making.
While technically the first script the studio has received, Sanderson clarified that the version submitted is actually a second draft. He performed extensive personal revisions before the delivery to ensure the narrative structure met his specific vision for the “Cosmere” cinematic debut. This follows a deliberate “practice run” where Sanderson wrote a screenplay for his novella The Emperor’s Soul to refine his screenwriting skills before tackling the higher stakes of the Mistborn narrative.
has delivered a second draft of the screenplay to studio executives.
Apple TV+ has already provided initial feedback on the draft, which Sanderson described as “really good.” The studio’s notes are reportedly helping to narrow the scope of the story without sacrificing core world-building elements. With the script now in the studio’s hands, the production has shifted its focus to the most vital next step: the search for a director.
The Hunt for a Director
The search for a filmmaker who can balance high-fantasy aesthetics with the series’ unique “Allomancy” magic system is now the primary objective. Finding a director is currently the project’s main bottleneck, as the choice will dictate the visual language of the entire franchise. Under the deal signed with Apple TV+ in January 2026, Brandon Sanderson retains a significant level of creative control, serving as a producer and writer with approval rights that exceed typical author-to-screen agreements.
This “rarefied” level of control ensures that the adaptation remains faithful to the source material, but it also adds complexity to the hiring process. The director must be willing to work within the established parameters of the Cosmere while bringing the technical expertise required for a large-scale blockbuster.
Beyond Mistborn, Sanderson is managing a broad development slate that includes a Stormlight Archive television series and the potential adaptation of The Emperor’s Soul. However, Mistborn remains the flagship project intended to launch the shared universe on screen.
Production Timeline and VFX Challenges
Despite the script milestone, Sanderson is tempering fan expectations regarding a release date. He has indicated that the film remains “many years off,” citing a realistic release window between 2028 and 2031. The timeline is largely driven by the sheer scale of the production and the technical requirements of the magic system.
Sanderson estimated that post-production will be a massive undertaking, with visual effects alone requiring approximately 18 months of dedicated work. Because the series relies on characters “burning” metals to push and pull against physical objects, the choreography and digital integration must be seamless to ground the fantasy in reality.
While production milestones are being met, the author emphasized that the project is still in the early stages of its journey from the page to the screen. The completion of the script marks the end of the 20th-anniversary celebration for the original novel, which began in July 2026, and officially starts the clock on the search for the creative team that will bring Scadrial to life.
