Apple TV Has Its Biggest Ever Week

A truckload of Emmy wins, a returning favourite, and a major movie premiere have all combined to deliver the biggest ratings week that streamer Apple TV has had in its seven-year history.

The long-running joke about Apple TV is that it creates (and renews) great shows that not a lot of people are watching, with only the odd exception. Not helping is that Apple TV, more than others like Netflix or Disney+ for example, has been very guarded about its viewership numbers.

While the streamer didn’t give up any real hard numbers today, Apple has confirmed that for the week of September 14th, the streamer saw a rise of 67% year-over-year and pulled in its highest weekly viewership ever.

The main things fuelling that surge: the Cold War buddy comedy movie “Mayday” starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, the fourth season of popular favourite “Ted Lasso,” and a post-Emmy viewership surge for winners “Widow’s Bay” and “Pluribus”.

Released direct to streaming on September 4th, “Mayday” has become the streamer’s biggest film debut on the platform to date over its first 18 days. Third-party analytics firms do seem to corroborate that.

“Widow’s Bay,” the biggest winner at the Emmys with fourteen awards, saw its viewership surge 280% week-over-week in the post-Emmys week. “Pluribus,” which won six awards, saw a 200% surge.

That’s not all though, as “Slow Horses” has seen its sixth season score a ratings jump of 25% over last season. “Ted Lasso” meanwhile is holding in the Nielsen top ten at No. 7 with 734 million minutes viewed for the week.
