Ant and Dec were royally duped into believing the plot of Amazon Prime’s The Summer I Turned Pretty was real – and it was epic.
How the tables have turned on the ITV duo after the longtime pranksters got a taste of their own medicine – with the receipts to prove it.
The presenters – currently in South Africa filming I’m A Celebrity All Stars – may be all too used to bamboozling other people in their infamous Saturday Night Takeaway segment, Undercover, but they’re not the only ones who know the art of deceit.
In a new social media trend, The Summer I Turned Pretty fans are pretending the show’s utterly bonkers plotline is happening in real life to get the reaction of their unsuspecting friends and family.
The chart-topping Prime series, which will come to a dramatic conclusion on Wednesday, follows the love triangle between Belly (Lola Tung) and two brothers, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) and Conrad (Christopher Briney).
By season three (spoilers ahead if you hadn’t already guessed), Belly is getting ready to marry Jeremiah after a four-year relationship, even though it is clear she and Conrad still harbour feelings for one another. Ensue chaos.

One Mitre employee pretended the situation was happening to one of her friends as they both chowed down on a banana.
‘My friend was meant to get married yesterday, and it got cancelled the day before. Because the groom’s brother said that he was in love with her. And they used to date five years ago,’ she casually explained.
Dec’s mouth dropped open as Ant exclaimed, ‘shut up!’ as she barrelled on.
‘So, on the wedding day, she told her fiancé, and was like “Your brother just told me he loved me last night still, I pick you”
‘And he was like, “Can you look me in the eye and say that you don’t have any feelings for him?” And, she said, “I can’t do that. There’s still a part of me that will always love Connie.”‘
‘Oh my god that’s brilliant,’ Ant said to which Dec said: ‘It’s not brilliant’.

Although, as any gossip-lover can agree with, Ant then added: ‘No, what I mean is, as a story. Not for them!’
Dec couldn’t get enough, asking for the juicy story to be told again.
The unidentified woman then explained her friend has ‘now flown to Paris’ and was still hung up on the other brother, whom she had dated five years prior.
Metro TV reporter Asyia Iftikhar shares the unexpected brilliance of The Summer I Turned Pretty
I’m hooked. I put my hands up. I hang my head in shame! ‘I was wrong’, I cry from the rafters as I watch my fourth episode of the night.
Don’t mistake me, this show is utterly absurd.
Why do the brothers treat each other like acquaintances forced to hang out with some mutual friends a couple of times a year?
Why has everyone just got over Belly going from one brother to the next in the space of a month (with the funeral of their mother jammed in between!)
Why hasn’t Conrad found literally anyone to date while studying at Stanford? Instead, he remains hung up on his ex, who is dating his brother (just in case you need another reminder).
Why hasn’t anyone sent Jeremiah to therapy to work through his self-esteem issues? (Come on dude, your girlfriend is clearly not over… you guessed it… your brother).
Why is no one batting an eyelid at the weird, weird episode where Belly has to share one motel room with both brothers, whom she is still choosing between. (I love the one-bed trope as much as the next person but…)
None of this matters, though, because it (begrudgingly) makes for excellent TV.
Frankly, for a teen drama, the stakes are so messy that I simply have to see how this gets resolved. Will Belly tear this family apart, or will they find a way through this?
I don’t know, but unfortunately, I have to find out.

As the pair got progressively more invested, Dec even whipped his glasses off in the echoing silence.
‘This is a bit large for me,’ Dec admitted, while Ant ironically added: ‘Tell you what, there’s a TV show in this!’
He even sweetly offered to send Jeremiah ‘a message from Ant and Dec to cheer him up’ and even joked ‘more fish in the sea’.
Hey, the show has been the talk of the town for the whole summer for a reason – you can’t deny its enthralling plot. And people were amused by their reaction.
‘The best thing I’ve seen all year, pay rise for whoever created this x’ Natalieoleary wrote on Instagram.
‘Aww Dec “..this is too large for me” he was emotionally invested really quickly,’ katie.louise cackled.
‘This is brilliant,’ Alexa Louise Williams said.
‘You can tell Dec loves the gossip,’ Halyleylwilkins clocked.
‘We are invested in how invested they are,’ Bafta’s official account clocked.

‘Dec is so shocked he can’t close his mouth without banana in it, absolutely great stitch up,’ goodgollymisspolly added.
In fact, the third and final season has generated so much discourse (birthing the newest dinner party debate, Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah) that the show itself had to issue a warning to fans not to bully the cast members over the actions of their fictional characters.
One thing’s for sure, it’s time for Ant and Dec to binge-watch the show in time for the finale, so we can all experience the highly anticipated finale together.
The Summer I Turned Pretty is available to stream on Amazon Prime. The final episode premieres on Wednesday, September 17.
