The first week of September 2025, Nintendo teased a potential Mega Malamar reveal for Pokemon Legends: Z-A. It also meant merchandise appearing in Japan and such. Now, it’s confirmed the “Malamar.mp4” teaser was hinting at the reveal of the character’s Mega Evolution. That also means a website update sharing additional details.
The new trailer going over Mega Malamar in Pokemon Legends: Z-A is a more traditional one that involves gameplay footage. We see a trainer running with Malamar. Then, they encounter an opposing trainer. The creature then Mega Evolves to defeat and take on its opponents, using its psychic abilities to influence them somehow. In-game, it remains a Dark and Psychic dual type. The website also said that it uses hypnosis even more effectively and considers everyone its “pawns.”

This Mega Evolution joins three other new ones. Those are Mega Dragonite, Mega Victreebel, and Mega Hawlucha. So far Malamar is the second to get this kind of teaser campaign. Victreebel's involved a "found footage" sort of situation.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A will come to the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on October 16, 2025.
