‘WTF Is Happening’: SNL’s Punkie Johnson Shocked by Michael Longfellow’s Exit

SNL just announced its biggest cast shake-ups in the history of the show, and just like fans, Punkie Johnson is also surprised by it. She voiced her disbelief after learning that Michael Longfellow won’t return for Season 51, joining a growing list of surprising exits from the show.

Michael Longfellow confirmed he will not return to SNL for Season 51, ending his three-season run. Known for his dry delivery on Weekend Update and his role as a strong straight man in sketches, he even tested for a shot at the Weekend Update anchor desk. But instead of stepping into that role, he confirmed his exit.

Punkie Johnson, upon seeing this, wrote on Instagram, “This is like the departed… My sexy handsome work husband… I love you so much…I’ll call you… Welcome back outside baby…. I’ll see you out here soon.” Her words captured the shock many fans are sharing as the exits pile up.

Heidi Gardner also confirmed she’s leaving after eight years. Johnson was shocked as well. “This probly the biggest surprise of this ‘shake up’,” she commented. Further calling her a “shining star” and an “SNL legend for life.” Gardner became one of the show’s most recognised performers, known for characters like Bailey Gismert and Angel, and she logged more sketches than anyone else in Season 49.

Devon Walker and Emil Wakim joined the list of cast members leaving SNL. Walker, who spent three seasons on the show, was welcomed by Johnson, saying, “Welcome back Dev. It’s fun outside baby.”

Whereas, Wakim, who lasted one season, admitted the exit felt like a “gut punch,” got Punkie Johnson saying, “Keep your head up baby… Let’s play outside.. it’s been fun.”

The SNL departures follow creator Lorne Michaels’ comments about feeling “pressure to reinvent” the show post-anniversary. Writers Celeste Yim and Rosebud Baker also confirmed their exits, signaling a major behind-the-scenes change alongside the cast turnover.
