Will Smith’s new action comedy movie, titled Fast and Loose, has found a replacement for Michael Bay.
It was announced last month that Bay had dropped out of directing Fast and Loose for Netflix following creative differences with Smith. More specifically, the two reportedly disagreed on the tone of the movie — Bay wanted to emphasize the action aspects, while Smith wanted to lean into the comedy.
“The film is about a man who wakes up in Tijuana with no memories,” a description of the plot reads. “As he pieces together his past, he learns he’s been living two lives: one as a crime kingpin and the other as an undercover CIA agent.”
Who is replacing Michael Bay in the new Will Smith movie?
Per Deadline, Fast and Loose is now being directed by John Swab instead of Bay.
“Given Smith’s busy schedule, the studio had to stick to the production schedule and took meetings with several candidates before landing on Swab, who blew away not only the studio execs but the star of the film as well,” the outlet reports.
Fast and Loose will easily be Swab’s most high-profile project, as his past filmography includes titles such as 2016’s Let Me Make You a Martyr, 2019’s Run with the United, 2021’s Body Brokers, 2021’s Ida Red, 2022’s Candy Land, 2023’s Little Dixie, 2023’s One Day as a Lion, 2024’s King Ivory, and 2024’s Long Gone Heroes.
While Bay may be out, Bad Boys producer Jerry Bruckheimer has boarded Fast and Loose as a producer. Smith, Chad Oman, David Leitch, Kelly McCormick, and Adam Fishbach also serve as producers, while executive producers include Kosaku Yada, James Lassiter, Robert Simonds, Noah Fogelson, Jeff Waxman, and Jen Madeloff. The script comes from Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, Eric Pearson, and Dave Callaham.
A release date for Fast and Loose has not yet been announced.
