Renny Harlin, the filmmaker behind action staples like Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger, has revealed the creative impasse that led him to decline the opportunity to direct a James Bond film. During a press tour for his upcoming action thriller The Beast, Harlin detailed a meeting with Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson where he walked away from the franchise over a fundamental disagreement regarding the series’ lead actor.
The director’s primary objection was centered on Timothy Dalton, who was the incumbent 007 at the time of the meeting. Despite the franchise’s prestige, Harlin told the producers that Dalton did not fit his vision for the iconic spy, famously telling them, “He’s not my Bond.”
While Harlin reportedly referred to the project in recent comments as The Living Daylights, the timeline of his career peak—following the success of Die Hard 2 (1990) and Cliffhanger (1993)—suggests the discussions took place during the extended development phase of what eventually became 1995’s GoldenEye.
The Suggestion of Pierce Brosnan
The irony of Harlin’s departure lies in the solution he proposed to the producers. According to Harlin, he explicitly suggested that the studio should recast the role, specifically naming Pierce Brosnan as the ideal successor. At the time, Broccoli and Wilson reportedly refused to move on from Dalton, leading Harlin to exit the project to pursue other opportunities.
Harlin suggested for the role years before the studio eventually made the change for .
The refusal to recast proved temporary. After a legal hiatus that kept Bond off the screen for six years following Licence to Kill, Eon Productions eventually followed the exact path Harlin had recommended. Timothy Dalton officially stepped down, and Pierce Brosnan was cast for GoldenEye, which successfully revitalized the franchise for a new generation.
A Divergent Career Path
Harlin’s decision to walk away from the 007 franchise resulted in one of the most stark “what if” scenarios in 1990s cinema. While GoldenEye, directed by Martin Campbell, became a massive commercial and critical success, Harlin moved on to direct the pirate epic Cutthroat Island (1995). That film became one of the most famous box-office disappointments in history, leading to the collapse of Carolco Pictures.
Despite the divergence in outcomes, Harlin has previously discussed his brush with the franchise as a matter of creative conviction. His career has seen him navigate various genres, from the horror of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master to the shark thriller Deep Blue Sea. According to Looper, Harlin’s career-spanning perspective often returns to his preference for specific casting choices that define the tone of his action set-pieces.
Harlin is currently promoting The Beast, a 2026 release starring Samuel L. Jackson and Joel Kinnaman. The film marks a return to the high-stakes action genre that defined his early career, even as he reflects on the moment he chose to pass on the tuxedo.
