Prime Video’s Reacher still has more than two dozen Jack Reacher novels to draw from for future seasons, yet Lee Child has identified one fan-favorite book that may never make the jump to television. The reason he shared has nothing to do with budget, violence, or episode count.

Lee Child explains the unusual obstacle to bringing the fan-favorite Reacher novel to television

The obstacle is snow, specifically, the massive amount of snow required to bring 61 Hours to life. Child sat down with Collider ahead of his new Reacher novel Chain Reaction and revealed which book poses the greatest challenge for the hit Prime Video series. The fan-favorite 2010 thriller strands Jack Reacher in Bolton, South Dakota, after a bus crash during a blizzard. That icy setting drives the entire story, creating the isolation and restricted movement that define the plot. Reacher also battles the cold throughout the novel.

That reliance on snow makes filming a logistical nightmare, according to Child. “61 Hours I would love to see, but that sort of thing is impossible to make because it depends on snow,” he told Collider. “You can’t plausibly shoot in snow because you’ve got this virgin, snow-covered landscape. You can only ever do take one.”

Child’s point about continuity is simple. Once actors and crew walk through a pristine snow-covered location, resetting that landscape for another take becomes far harder than resetting a conventional set. Finding somewhere that can reliably provide that much snow across an entire production adds another layer of difficulty. Additionally, the snowstorm creates the ticking-clock tension as Reacher becomes involved with local police and a vulnerable witness whose testimony threatens a dangerous criminal operation.

For now, Reacher continues streaming on Prime Video. Lee Child’s Chain Reaction, the latest Jack Reacher novel, is releasing on October 20. He will also co-write Zero Margin, the first Frances Neagley novel, with Yasmin Angoe, coming in spring 2027.
