Skyler Gisondo has given DCU fans their clearest hint yet about when The People v. Gorilla Grodd takes place. The actor, who returns as Jimmy Olsen, mapped out the spinoff’s spot on the timeline. His answer suggests the HBO Max series sits close to the main films without directly interrupting them.
Skyler Gisondo explains possible timeline placement for the Gorilla Grodd series
Skylar Gisondo told ScreenRant that The People v. Gorilla Grodd timeline has it “somewhat before maybe the events of the movies,” while still leading into the next chapter. He then refined that position. “I think it’s sort of somewhere in between the two [Superman movies]. I don’t know. I should probably know more about the answer, but I think the idea is it’s kind of almost adjacent to this main timeline, but before the events of the second movie,” Gisondo explained.
That second movie, Man of Tomorrow, is releasing on July 9, 2027. Skyler Gisondo also recalled how much fun he had making it. “Man of Tomorrow was so much fun. I love this group,” he said, describing the cast’s time together at a single hotel near the studio as feeling like summer camp.
The People v. Gorilla Grodd flips the superhero formula. Gorilla Grodd, played by Jimmy Tatro, stands accused of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. The eight-episode series presents itself as an in-world true-crime docuseries, with the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen reopening the case to test whether Metropolis wrongly convicted the ape.
Gisondo called the show “very Lance/Primetime adjacent, this kind of true-crime mockumentary thing.” He added, “It’s fun. You feel very free. Anything could happen at any time.” He also praised creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, calling himself “a huge fan” of their work on American Vandal, and said the project feels “really unlike anything we’ve seen in this world.”
Production started in August after HBO Max picked up eight episodes. Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, and Wendell Pierce reprise their Superman roles, while Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, and Tim Baltz round out the cast. HBO Max has not set a release date.
