Vikram’s much-awaited collaboration with Anand Shankar has finally revealed its title. Tentatively referred to as Chiyaan 63 until now, the upcoming Tamil film has been titled Power House. The makers unveiled the title along with a striking promo on Monday, coinciding with Ganesh Chathurthi, offering audiences a glimpse into the intriguing world of the film. The promo introduces Vikram in a rather unconventional avatar. Sporting an old-school appearance, the actor is initially presented as a caretaker who takes responsibility for arranging weddings and offers a "100% guarantee" on the services he undertakes. But as the glimpse progresses, it becomes clear that there is considerably more to his character than meets the eye.
A caretaker with a dangerous secret
The title promo opens with a back shot of Vikram as he walks through his old-style home carrying a plantain thar. The seemingly ordinary setting soon establishes his character as someone who takes his responsibilities very seriously. Mekha Rajan, Subash Selvam and Samyuktha Hegde are shown reporting to him after carrying out tasks assigned to them, adding to the quirky atmosphere surrounding his household.
The promo then introduces Riya Shibu as Vikram’s niece. Her character is seen daydreaming, providing a lighter contrast to the increasingly mysterious proceedings around her. The domestic setting continues with scenes featuring Urvashi and VTV Ganesh, who are seen engaging in banter while preparing food in the kitchen.
However, the tone takes a sharp turn when Vikram heads into the store room to retrieve some supplies. Inside, two severely injured men are revealed, immediately suggesting that his seemingly respectable caretaker persona is merely one side of his character. The glimpse then cuts to Vikram calmly mopping up blood, giving audiences their first look at his ruthless alter ego.
The sequence inevitably recalls the duality associated with some of Vikram’s most memorable characters, while also leaving enough unanswered questions about the nature of his role in Power House.
Vikram and Anand Shankar reunite
Power House marks Vikram and Anand Shankar’s second collaboration after Iru Mugan. Released in 2016, the science-fiction action thriller featured Vikram in dual roles and received mixed responses from critics and audiences. Despite the divided critical reception, the film performed well commercially, with reports putting its worldwide gross at around Rs 100 crore.
The new film brings together an interesting technical team as well. Santhosh Narayanan is composing the music, while cinematographer RD Rajasekar is associated with the project. Gopi Prasanna, who has worked across several creative departments including production design, is also part of the team. Costume designer and stylist Poornima Ramaswamy completes the key technical credits announced so far.
Produced by Sendhil Thyagarajan and Arjun Thyagarajan under the Sathya Jyothi Films banner, Power House features Riya Shibu and Shammy Thilakan alongside Vikram. The casting also adds an interesting connection to Vikram’s recent filmography. Riya Shibu produced Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2, which starred Vikram in the lead and was released in March last year.
With its title now revealed and the first glimpse hinting at a character with a far darker side, Power House has already set up plenty of intrigue. The reunion of Vikram and Anand Shankar, combined with the film’s unusual domestic setting and sudden shift into violent territory, makes this one of the actor’s more intriguing upcoming projects.
