Frank Grillo, who portrays Rick Flag Sr. in the DCU series Peacemaker and Bill Bevilaqua in Tulsa King, reflected on what it is like beating up John Cena and Sylvester Stallone on their respective shows.

Grillo first voiced Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos Season 1 before essaying the live-action version of the character in 2025’s Superman. He later appeared in Peacemaker Season 2. Grillo joined the Tulsa King cast in the sophomore season of the hit Paramount+ crime-drama series.

DC’s Frank Grillo talks working with John Cena and Sylvester Stallone

Frank Grillo spoke about his experience of working with John Cena and Sylvester Stallone during an interview with E! News on Tuesday. He teased that Flag Sr. would beat up Cena’s Chris Smith / Peacemaker in the upcoming episode.

“Thursday, I beat him up,” Grillo said when asked about his face-off against Cena’s titular character. The interviewer noted that the Kingdom actor is also taking on Stallone in Tulsa King before asking what it is like to play these “tough guy” roles. This prompted Grillo to quip, “You should be asking them that.”

However, Grillo soon laughed and amended, “No, it’s amazing.” He added, “To be across from Stallone, who was like my childhood hero, it’s not lost on me that there’s Rocky.”

Grillo stated that Stallone is “amazing” because he “understands” the “effect” he has on people and “he puts you at ease.” When the interviewer recalled speaking to Stallone earlier and how “self-deprecating” the Hollywood legend is, Grillo observed, “He has to be. He’s so revered. If he doesn’t do that, it’s a problem.”

The actor also disclosed that Stallone personally reached out to him about joining Tulsa King before Season 2. He continued, “I said [to Stallone] if it’s opposite you, I am in. Don’t send me a script, I’m coming.”

Peacemaker Season 2 premiered on Max (formerly HBO Max) on August 21, 2025. Meanwhile, Tulsa King Season 3 debuts on September 21, 2025. Paramount+ has already renewed the series for Season 4.
