A destructive tornado struck Western Sicily on October 9, 2026, leaving a trail of wreckage through the towns of Marsala and Petrosino. The storm system, which officials described as having a level of intensity more common in the United States, triggered the evacuation of hundreds of schoolchildren and left at least nine people injured.

The tornado struck with particular force at the Alcide De Gasperi school in Marsala’s Terrenove district. Approximately 300 students were inside the building when the winds shattered windows and caused portions of the ceilings to collapse. School staff managed a rapid evacuation, and while four children were among those treated for injuries, officials from the provincial health authority (ASP Trapani) confirmed that the majority of students escaped serious harm.

Emergency services reported that two of the nine victims are currently in critical condition at a hospital in Palermo. Their vehicle was reportedly swept off the SS115 highway and thrown into a nearby ditch by the force of the wind. Elsewhere along the coastal road and within the affected towns, multiple passenger cars and commercial trucks were overturned, while uprooted trees and downed electricity poles blocked transit routes.

The powerful tornado disrupted transport across the region, leading to the temporary suspension of rail links between Trapani and Marsala. Authorities closed several level crossings and sections of the SS115 to clear debris and assess structural damage to homes. In Petrosino, the force of the winds overturned multiple passenger cars and trucks, and uprooted electricity poles and trees.

Climate Factors and Official Response

Salvatore Cocina, the head of Sicily’s Civil Protection, stated the event was fueled by heat accumulation in the Mediterranean from a sweltering summer. Cocina noted that this stored thermal energy provided the “fuel” necessary for the intensification of the storm upon reaching land.

While the immediate threat from this specific cell has passed, meteorologists continue to monitor extreme weather patterns in the Mediterranean. Local authorities remain on high alert as cleanup efforts continue across the Trapani province.
