Movies that do well in theaters typically do well on the PVOD market and streaming as well. But one of the biggest home-video hits of the last five years nearly didn't make it to theaters at all. During the pandemic, Paramount stunned the industry by offloading its $200 million sci-fi tent pole The Tomorrow War, starring Chris Pratt, to Prime Video. Suddenly, nothing was off the table. It was rumored that even No Time to Die, Daniel Craig's final James Bond movie, had several streamers making expensive bids. However, one movie staunchly refused to budge from its original theatrical-first release strategy, and this was mostly down to the clout Tom Cruise held with Paramount.
