Tim Allen just dropped a brutally honest update on a beloved ’90s sitcom reboot, and it’s not looking good. The actor revealed why the long-awaited project remains at a standstill, pointing to ongoing issues with key cast members.

Tim Allen says the Home Improvement reboot is ‘stuck’

Tim Allen recently revealed that a potential Home Improvement reboot faces obstacles due to issues involving the actors who played his onscreen sons. The actor shared the update in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly while promoting Toy Story 5.

“They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys,” Allen told the outlet. He added that the cast members have “their own issues” to deal with at this time. Allen also noted that he envisioned the reboot focusing on the onscreen sons’ storylines.

“I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them,” he said. “That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly.” Zachery Ty Bryan, who played the oldest son, Brad, was arrested in November 2025 over a domestic violence violation. Bryan also faced prior arrests for suspicion of DUI, felony assault, and robbery.

Patricia Richardson, who played Tim’s wife Jill, previously addressed the reboot in 2024. She revealed on the Back to the Best podcast that Jonathan Taylor Thomas is no longer pursuing acting. “He’s not interested in acting,” Richardson explained about the actor who played middle child Randy. Taran Noah Smith, who portrayed the youngest son, Mark, has not appeared onscreen since the 1999 series finale.

Allen currently stars in ABC’s Shifting Gears, which begins filming its third season in July. Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning all reunited with Allen on the show’s second season. Allen first discussed a potential Home Improvement offshoot in 2023 with The Messenger. He compared the concept to Fuller House at that time.

The original ABC sitcom ran from 1991 to 1999.
