It’s unfortunate that the modern cinematic ecosystem has rarely given space to old-fashioned dramas that don’t feature major stars or have significant awards prospects, as the theatrical market has dwindled in its diversity of options. Just because a film is not shot with IMAX in mind does not mean that it does not deserve to be seen on a big screen, as there is something powerful in being wrapped up in a powerful, emotional story with an attentive audience. Although it first debuted to strong reviews at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, A Little Prayer was held from release for over two years due to distribution complications amidst the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Although there’s been little promotion for its upcoming theatrical release at the end of August by Music Box Films, A Little Prayer is the type of intimate, thought-provoking family drama that simply doesn’t get made anymore.
