Perhaps one of the most important American literary voices of the 1990s, Denis Johnson is also the kind of author who, unless you’ve spent time in a creative writing program or digging around for somewhat obscure cult classics, may have somehow slipped past your radar. His body of work is relatively small compared with more prolific contemporaries such as Joyce Carol Oates or Philip Roth, but few writers of his generation managed to deliver such a powerful punch with their inventive prose.
