Whether the characters are solving crimes or saving lives, procedurals are a TV staple for a reason. Their structure is perfect for an episodic format that allows viewers to focus on a new case each week, and it's easy to get attached to these characters while watching them help others in between dealing with their own problems. So many shows have since found clever ways to build off the classic procedural model, like medical procedural Royal Pains, which follows a concierge doctor (Mark Feuerstein) in the Hamptons.
