Broadly speaking, there are two categories of science fiction: Soft sci-fi is mostly character-driven and focused on "soft" sciences, such as sociology and politics, with no particularly big concern for realism and leaning more heavily toward "fiction" than "science." Hard sci-fi, on the other hand, is more so driven by "hard" sciences like physics and biology. This is science fiction that emphasizes scientific realism, logic, and plausible technology.
