First impressions matter in pretty much every aspect of life, which certainly includes motion pictures. A great ending sears the film into the audience's memory, and a good middle makes sure that they remain engaged throughout the whole runtime, but opening scenes are easily the most important part of any movie. It's the hook that's supposed to hijack viewers' attention, the sequence whose whole role is to make the audience go "interesting, this is a story I'd like to keep seeing unfold."
