We totally get it, when we’ve not even had Halloween yet, most of us would agree it’s probably way too early to start wheeling out Christmas adverts (Mariah Carey hasn’t even thawed yet!).
But we’re willing to make an exception when it comes to The Muppets.
Yes, the cuddliest gang in showbiz have journeyed back to Victorian London to pay homage to their classic festive movie The Muppet Christmas Carol in a new ad for the US retailer Walmart.
Christmas has come early thanks to The MuppetsRewriting the classic Christmas film’s opening number, characters like Kermit The Frog, Miss Piggy and The Great Gonzo, back in action as Charles Dickens, have teamed up to pay homage to the family favourite, with plenty of nods to the film that hammer home the nostalgia.
And keep your eyes peeled until the end, when you might just spot a certain Emmy-nominated White Lotus star filling in for Sir Michael Caine as Ebeneezer Scrooge.
The Muppet Christmas Carol first hit cinemas in 1992, and was the characters’ first cinematic outing since the death of the franchise’s creator, Jim Henson, two years earlier.
In what may come as a surprise to us now, it initially underperformed at the box office, but later gained a whole new following upon its home video release and, in later years, addition to streaming services. It is now considered one of the best festive films of all time, as well as ranking among the best adaptations of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
Director Brian Henson previously told HuffPost UK: “Of course I never expected we’d still be talking about The Muppet Christmas Carol 30 years later.”
“I was aware that, since we were adapting a classic piece of literature, it was important not to date the production, not to use hip contemporary language anywhere, or hairstyles, or anything like that,” he added.
“[And I was] mindful that, ‘if we do this right, it will always look right, no matter when or where you watch the movie’.”
