Three things in life are certain: death, taxes, and that Michael Myers will rise from the grave. Since 1978, the slasher has defined a genre by refusing to die. John Carpenter’s Halloween is a classic horror film that suggests there are, at times, no motive for murder other than pure evil. Michael Myers was born evil, and the havoc he wreaks on Haddonfield is just for love of the game. Later Halloween films retcon this idea by making him Laurie Strode’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) brother, but the newest trilogy picks up right where the first film left off.
