There has been a further development in the clash between the former The Goldbergs co-stars Wendi McLendon-Covey and Jeff Garlin. In a recent interview, Garlin cited mental health as a reason for his exit from the show amid accusations of inappropriate behavior on set. However, McLendon-Covey then appeared to push back against Garlin’s statements.
Wendi McLendon-Covey pushes back on Jeff Garlin’s Goldbergs explanation
Jeff Garlin departed The Goldbergs after he was reportedly accused of inappropriate behavior on set. This allegedly included touching and hugging people and making uncomfortable jokes. The actor denied the accusations at the time and recently offered another explanation. Garlin said on The Daily Beast’s Obsessed podcast that he was dealing with a mental health issue during his time on the show.
“I actually empathize with [McLendon-Covey] because, at the time, I was undiagnosed bipolar,” the comedian stated. He continued, “I was miserable on the show, and I was miserable with my performance. And she was always trying to tell me, ‘Hey, you’re really great on the show.'” Garlin added that he “didn’t believe her” and just got to the point where he had to leave. He further claimed that McLendon-Covey “was very resentful.”
He said, “Being bipolar, I was either one of three things: dark, dark, dark, dark, didn’t talk and look at anyone; happy to the point of mania, never turning off my thing; or mean — really, really mean.” Garlin also stated that he didn’t get diagnosed till he was 59, which was towards the end of his time on the sitcom. The father of two stated that if McLendon-Covey wants to continue the resentment, that’s on her. However, he doesn’t hold any resentment and will always appreciate her as an actor.
The actress appears to have hit back against Garlin’s description of events in the comments of The Daily Beast’s post containg a video of his remarks, writing, “Huh.” She continued in a follow-up comment, “Let’s just say I remember things very differently, as does the crew, the other actors, the writers, and our executives.”
