The Girlfriend Season 2 Is Happening at Amazon MGM but There’s a Twist

The Girlfriend will reportedly receive a Season 2, but with a twist. Amazon MGM Studios is developing the follow-up, whose predecessor became a Prime Video hit last year.

The Boyfriend is reportedly in development over at Amazon MGM Studios. However, this is not a Season 2 of The Girlfriend but a standalone story.

According to Deadline, it will follow new characters, with the narrative tackling themes of masculinity. Writers have supposedly entered talks to join the show. However, a screenwriter is not yet attached.

Previously, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Robin Wright, who stars in the original, said she didn’t know if a sophomore installment would happen, stressing it was up to Amazon. However, she admitted she would be “completely satisfied” even if it didn’t materialize.

The first series premiered on September 10, 2025, and consisted of six episodes, released in its entirety. Following launch, it reportedly cultivated over 25 million views, subsequently becoming the top new series in the United Kingdom.

Moreover, it received robust critical scores on review aggregators. On Rotten Tomatoes, The Girlfriend holds an 87% approval rating and a decent 72% audience score. Meanwhile, Metacritic has assigned it a Metascore of 70 and a user score of 6.9, both indicating “generally favorable” reception.

Created by Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher, The Girlfriend is based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name. Exploring themes of greed, love, power, and obsession, the story follows Laura, played by Wright, who meets her son Daniel’s (Laurie Davidson) new girlfriend, Cherry (Olivia Cooke). Quickly becoming suspicious of her motives, the former tries everything in her power to separate her boy from the latter.

Aside from Wright, Davidson, and Cooke, the series features Waleed Zuaiter, Karen Henthorn, Tanya Moodie, and Shalom Brune-Franklin. Appearing in supporting roles are Anna Chancellor, Marina Bye, Nicholas Burns, Naomi Sheldon, and Stephenson Ardern-Sodje.

In addition to starring in the show, Wright also directed three episodes. She also executive-produced alongside Asher, Dave Clarke, Frances, Caroline Norris, Phil Robertson, Will Tennant, John Zois, María Cabello, and Jonathan Cavendish.
