The Boys creator Eric Kripke shared his anxiety about how audiences will receive the show’s series finale in separate interviews with THE RIVER and Polygon. Kripke admitted that crafting the conclusion to the Prime Video superhero satire left him deeply uneasy. “I approached it with absolute terror. I was not cool or confident,” Kripke told THE RIVER.

Kripke pointed to other major series that faced backlash over their endings as a key source of concern. He specifically referenced Game of Thrones, calling it a “technically and creatively a groundbreaking monumental achievement which stumbled a little bit on three episodes in eight seasons.” Kripke noted that audiences now dismiss the show despite its overall quality. “And so now everyone is like, Game of Thrones, meh. I’m like, really? That show changed the world and was so hard to make,” he added.

The showrunner explained that this fear ultimately pushed him toward greater precision with the finale. “I was very careful and combing through every word and kicking every tire I could and questioning everything,” Kripke stated. He expressed cautious optimism, saying, “I think we pulled it off, question mark.”

Kripke acknowledged that early colleague reactions have been positive but questioned their objectivity. “People who see it tend to say it’s good, but those are all people who work for me, so who the hell knows,” he said. Speaking separately to Polygon, Kripke highlighted the broader challenge of crafting memorable conclusions. “You can really count on two hands the great series finales,” Kripke observed, adding that “landing the plane is hard.”

The Boys Season 5 currently airs new episodes weekly on Prime Video every Wednesday.
