Crime stories have always worked well on television because they give the audience an immediate question that needs answering. Somewhere around the 1990s, though, the genre became much more interested in going beyond just that. This was the era when crime shows became darker, messier, and increasingly interested in exploring morally grey concepts, including corrupt detectives, understandable criminals, and mysteries that exposed problems much bigger than a single arrest.
