Tape B explores the relationship between dubstep’s past and present with the release of his debut album, Ghosts in the Static.
Over the years, Tape B’s sound has become instantly recognizable. After spending most of his career building on the sounds of dubstep’s past, this Florida native has carved his place in the bass scene with both nostalgia and grit. By blending the old with the new, he has effortlessly grown a massive fan base eager for the release of his long-awaited debut album, Ghosts in the Static.
Before Tape B, there was Berk, a hungry producer who drew inspiration from the dubstep that made him fall in love with dance music culture. Projects like A Dose of Nostalgia and Over Saturated sent massive ripples of bass-heavy bliss to the masses, drawing support from artists like GRiZ, Zeds Dead, Subtronics, Excision, Ganja White Night, Wooli, and Peekaboo, and further encapsulating his name amongst some of the genre’s greats.
By pairing rigid low-end with classic hip-hop flair and unmistakable UKF undertones, his music has taken him to the stars, selling out massive shows and headlining world-renowned festivals worldwide. Ghosts in the Static builds on that vision by returning to his roots with a distinctly modern edge, making it his most expansive project to date. Spanning 12 tracks, the album captivates with cinematic builds and roaring basslines that crack open the hearts of those who grew up during dubstep’s peak and draw in newer listeners with his effortless, new-age touch.
Ghosts in the Static opens with “Signature Sound,” a collaboration with Atlanta-based producer Zaytoven that playfully explores spoken word alongside the wub. It feels like stepping into a time warp that blends two worlds together effortlessly and sets up the rest of the album in a wildly entertaining way.
“Keep Em In Check” comes sweeping in with a vengeance, taking listeners back to a time when dubstep reigned supreme. The drop hits like a punch to the gut, with grimy textures and nostalgic undertones that can send a shiver down every basshead’s spine. “Hold On” has that Rusko-esque flair that made me squeal as a millennial. It’s bouncy, it’s soulful, and it’s everything this genre has been lacking in recent years. “No Fool” shifts into a more riddim-like landscape, with a bassline built to bulldoze straight onto the heaviest bass-fueled stages.
Standout tracks include “I’ll Never Know” with Effin, which blends reggae influence with delightful darkness, and “Act Like You Know / Walk Away,” which samples some of dubstep’s most notorious sounds and fully encompasses what this project aims to accomplish. He takes the sounds that made him want to become a producer and explores where they can go next.
