Sydney Sweeney addressed questions ahead of her arrival at the Toronto International Film Festival, making it clear she would not discuss the American Eagle controversy. Instead, she focused on her new film, highlighting the demanding work it required and her commitment to supporting the cast and crew behind it.

Here’s what we know about her comments, the role she is promoting, and the reaction they sparked at the festival.

Sydney Sweeney will attend the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5. She is premiering Christy, her new film about boxer Christy Martin.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Sydney Sweeney confirmed she would not address her recent American Eagle campaign backlash, stating, “I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I’m not there to talk about jeans.” She added, “The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”

Sweeney portrays Christy Martin, known as the “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” who rose from West Virginia roots to become the most prominent female boxer of the 1990s. She said, “I was blown away that her story wasn’t more known on a universal, global level because it’s just one of the most harrowing and inspiring women that I’ve ever met in my entire life.”

Director David Michôd explained, “One of the things that drew me to this story was the idea of being able to make a movie that starts, in a way, as a beautiful, wild, underdog sports movie, but then starts to shift into something that’s really harrowing and, ultimately, deeply moving.”

For the role, Sweeney trained for months, gained 30 to 35 pounds, and endured concussions. “Every single fight you see, we are actually punching each other. We are going full force,” she said. “I always believed that you would not be able to make it feel real if it’s a stunt double or if it’s faking the hits.”

Michôd cowrote the film with Mirrah Foulkes after watching Untold: Deal With the Devil, a documentary on Martin. He emphasized the story’s global relevance: “It’s true all over the world that these relationships exist in epidemic proportions, and they too often frighteningly end up in partner homicide situations. It’s a global emergency.”
