Netflix will globally release the survival drama Surviving Hurricane Otis, titled Contra el Huracán in Spanish, on October 23, 2026. Directed by Jorge Michel Grau, the scripted feature film dramatizes the harrowing experience of individuals trapped at sea during the strongest hurricane to ever strike Mexico’s Pacific coast.
The story focuses on two half-brothers, Wirpul (Benny Emmanuel) and Candi (Kristyan Ferrer), who are caught on a boat when the Category 5 storm makes landfall. While several early reports mistakenly labeled the project as a documentary, the film is a narrative drama that seeks to capture the atmospheric terror of the disaster through a high-budget production lens.
Production utilized a 200-square-meter water tank at Churubusco Studios to simulate Category 5 storm conditions.
Unprecedented Production Scale
The production of Surviving Hurricane Otis represents a significant technical undertaking for the Mexican film industry. Director Jorge Michel Grau, known for the earthquake drama 7:19, utilized a crew of 800 people to bring the disaster to life. To simulate the 170 mph winds and catastrophic sea conditions, the team employed 500 visual effects specialists.
Rather than filming in the recovering city of Acapulco, the production reconstructed the ocean environment at Churubusco Studios in Mexico City. The team utilized a 200-square-meter water tank to film the pivotal disaster sequences, allowing for controlled but realistic depictions of the brothers’ struggle for survival against the rising tide and structural failures of their vessel.
Inspired by True Events
The film’s screenplay draws direct inspiration from the real-life survival of sailors Marlon Valdez and Jonathan Chico, who were among those on the water when the storm hit in October 2023. By focusing on the maritime perspective, the movie highlights a specific community deeply impacted by the event.
Hurricane Otis remains a somber milestone in regional history. When it struck Acapulco on October 25, 2023, it underwent rapid intensification that caught many by surprise, resulting in at least 52 deaths and becoming the costliest hurricane in Mexican history. The film aims to honor the resilience of the survivors while providing a visceral look at the sheer power of the natural world.
Grau has emphasized that the film is not merely about the destruction of property, but about the human psychological state during a life-threatening crisis. The performances of Emmanuel and Ferrer are central to this approach, portraying the desperate bond between family members when all external safety measures fail.
