Supergirl will be one of the biggest releases of the year. Here are some of the biggest DC Universe connections the movie will have and what you should watch ahead of its debut this week.
Supergirl is set to release in theaters on June 26, 2026, and will be based on Tom King’s 2021-2022 comic book series illustrated Bilquis Evely. The film stars Milly Alcock, who will play the titular role of Kara Zor-El. It is written by Ana Nogueira and produced by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
“When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
What should Supergirl audiences know about the movie beforehand?
The biggest thing to know about the upcoming Supergirl movie is that, unlike something like a larger-scale hero movie, the upcoming DCU movie is much more focused on Kara and her singular adventure. The movie follows Supergirl as she joins forces with Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young girl who recruits her to help avenge her father’s death.
While Supergirl herself is a superpowered Kryptonian, she won’t be facing off against any of DC’s most iconic villains. Instead, the movie is described as a “road trip” type of film, between two women who are going through their own issues separately, but must come together.
“I hate a long film.” director Craig Gillespie said to THR. “Because it’s this road trip between two women [Alcock and co-star Eve Ridley], and it’s very specific about their goals and where they’re getting to and going through their trauma, it just ended up landing there. The more that we kept it lean and true to just their mission, the better the film was. There is a ticking clock in this.”
The movie will also likely focus largely on Kara’s own issues dealing with the destruction of Krypton, as well as her relationship with Superman, her cousin. While Kara will be appearing in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow, a project that’s set to be much bigger, her own movie will focus more on the emotional depth of Supergirl when we first meet her in her own proper movie.
