FilmRatings.com confirmed the PG-13 classification. The Motion Picture Association flagged the upcoming prequel for “bloody images,” “strong violence,” “disturbing material” and “some smoking and teen drinking.”

These are warnings no other installment in the franchise has ever received. On paper, the rating matches its predecessors. The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes got its PG-13 in 2023 for strong violent content and disturbing material.

Mockingjay – Part 2 received one in 2015. Mockingjay – Part 1 followed in 2014, and Catching Fire in 2013. The original Hunger Games secured its PG-13 rating in 2012 for intense violent thematic material and disturbing images, all involving teens. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping breaks new ground, as no prior franchise movie drew a caution for bloody images and none mentioned teen drinking. This prequel does both.

The Gamemakers promise the most violent Hunger Games in history, and the source material backs that claim. Suzanne Collins set her 2025 novel during the Second Quarter Quell, which doubled the number of tributes. Sixteen-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, fights to survive one of the deadliest arenas ever built.

Readers have debated since publication whether the adaptation would pursue an R-rating to honor the book’s brutality. The novel includes a scene where a tribute holds the head of a child: a moment nearly impossible to film within PG-13 boundaries.

The teen drinking caution connects to Haymitch’s well-documented alcoholism in the original Hunger Games movies. Sunrise on the Reaping shows audiences the events that created his dependency. The smoking warning fits the same tragic arc.

Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie wrote the screenplay with Francis Lawrence at the helm. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping serves as both a sequel to The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and a prequel to the original 2012 film, making it the sixth one in the series.
