With Tales From ‘85 introducing a new character in Stranger Things in the form of Nikki Baxter, fans have wondered why the spin-off mainstay was missing from Season 3 of the main series. In response, program creator Eric Robles has come out to explain why the pink-haired rebel only appears in the Stranger Things continuity between the second and third installments.
Eric Robles reveals why Nikki wasn’t in Stranger Things Season 3
During a recent sit-down, the veteran animator revealed that there is a simple clarification behind Nikki’s absence in Stranger Things. While fan speculations ranged from Nikki falling out with Eleven and the gang to her meeting her end between seasons, he noted that it has more to do with children losing touch with friends due to a shortage of connective media in the 80s.
“One thing that’s probably hard for a lot of people to understand is that in the ’80s, it wasn’t like it is now – you would have a friend that you would meet for summertime, if you went to camp, and they’d be amazing friends, and you’d have amazing adventures for that one summer. It wasn’t like you stayed in touch via Instagram or anything,” Eric Robles remarked to SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar+).
Robles further added, “If you got a phone number, maybe you stay in touch. But for the most part, people came in and out of your life, and they were your best friend ever for the two weeks or three months that you were with them, and then they’re out of your life. It’s the same concept with Nikki, but we’ll see what happens to her at the end of this thing.”
Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85, which takes place between Seasons 2 and 3 of the main series, sees Mike and his gang befriend Nikki Baxter (voiced by Marty Supreme star Odessa A’zion). More details regarding Nikki’s fate in the series should unfold when the animated spin-off comes out on Netflix on April 23, 2026.
