Steven Spielberg was originally set to direct the first Harry Potter film but eventually left it. The acclaimed director has a new film releasing this week, Disclosure Day. He has now revealed why he passed on the opportunity to helm the massive cinematic franchise based on J.K. Rowling’s bestselling books.

Why did Steven Spielberg turn down a Harry Potter movie?

Steven Spielberg recently sat down with TCM to talk about his upcoming sci-fi movie Disclosure Day. Apart from the latest project, he also revealed a lesser-known fact about his connection to the Harry Potter series.

Steven Spielberg explains why he walked away from directing the first Harry Potter film, so he could take over filming AI: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE from Stanley Kubrick.

He shared that he was originally in line to direct the first Harry Potter film before Chris Columbus came aboard. He explained that he ultimately turned it to fulfill the final wish of his late friend and fellow director Stanley Kubrick. He wanted Spielberg to make A.I. Artificial Intelligence, a 2001 science fiction drama film.

“After his death, I was at the funeral at his home. Christiane [Kubrick] and Jan Harlan, her brother, approached me about taking over from Stanley, as Stanley had intended, and directing the movie,” said Spielberg. “I actually walked away from Harry Potter, which I was scheduled to direct as my next movie,” he added.

Spielberg was well aware that Harry Potter was destined to be a massive film, given J.K. Rowling’s books had already become a cultural phenomenon. “I gave that up to essentially do AI,” he said. Spielberg’s A.I. movie was released the same year, 2001, as the Harry Potter movie he was originally supposed to direct.

As for his new film, Disclosure Day focuses on the subject of aliens. It features Emily Blunt in the leading role alongside Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, and Eve Hewson. Wyatt Russell, McKenna Bridger, Elizabeth Marvel, Elliot Villar, and Chavo Guerrero Jr. are also in crucial roles.

Disclosure Day is set to hit theaters on June 12, 2026. The film has already generated positive buzz, earning rave reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
