Melissa McCarthy has revealed why a Spy sequel was never made, despite the 2015 comedy performing well and the people involved being ready to continue the franchise. In an interview with Variety, McCarthy was asked why Spy 2 did not happen, including whether her gender had anything to do with the decision.

While she acknowledged that it may not have helped, she also argued that the film’s performance should have been enough to justify another chapter. “No — well, Jesus, that probably doesn’t help, but I don’t know. It did so well. People can say that doesn’t matter. I think it does,” McCarthy said.

The actress then pointed to Thunder Force as an example of a project where a successful first movie had already led to plans for another chapter. “For Thunder Force, we were going to roll right into another one. We were like, ‘It’s so fun. It did incredibly well for Netflix. We already have the idea for it.”

McCarthy also questioned the industry’s changing approach to movies. She explained, “If I write something — or Ben and I write something — and it tanks, I’ll take the fall. Which we have not had to take. We don’t make $8 billion.”

“We don’t make those kind of movies, but, I mean, $120 million, I’m not mad at that. The studio’s not mad at that,” the actress continued. She further added that they wanted to make “a reasonably priced” film that could be fairly profitable, but according to her, “that model is no longer desirable.”

When the interviewer suggested that Spy should have become a franchise, McCarthy agreed and said the filmmakers were prepared to return to the characters. As previously reported, she explained, “We should be on the ninth Spy! Everyone on Spy was ready to re-rack immediately. There should be a new villain, new location.”
