Leaked footage of Spider-Man: Brand New Day has ignited discourse among Marvel fans, who are debating the nature of Doctor Strange’s spell. The memory-wiping spell was meant to erase Peter Parker’s identity from the world. But the new clip suggests there may be more to the story.
MJ appearing at Aunt May’s grave after Doctor Strange’s spell raises a big question
In the newly leaked footage from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, MJ is seen visiting Aunt May’s grave. The two-second clip, shared on X (formerly Twitter), shows MJ at a cemetery, most likely visiting Aunt May’s grave with Peter Parker.
A different post features the behind-the-scenes images from the set where the scene was probably filmed. It shows Zendaya in the same yellow turtleneck sweater as seen in the clip.
This moment is surprising because the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home established that Doctor Strange’s memory spell erased Peter from everyone’s memories, including MJ’s. Seeing her at the graveyard raises questions about how much she remembers and what role she plays in his new life.
Many speculate that Peter might have found a way to undo Strange’s spell in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, allowing MJ to remember everything. How he manages to do that raises a completely different line of questions.
Meanwhile, a second possible explanation is that the spell could simply have altered how MJ remembers people from her past. While she wouldn’t remember Peter, she might have memories about Aunt May. It could be from May’s organization, F.E.A.S.T., or something else entirely. That could be enough for her to visit the grave.
A third theory suggests a simpler explanation. The cemetery scene may take place near the end of the film. As seen in the official trailer, Peter (as Spider-Man) rescues MJ and leaves her under the Punisher’s protection. This experience could help Spider-Man and MJ grow closer over the course of the story, eventually leading Peter to reveal his true identity to her. If that happens, MJ may choose to accompany him when he visits May’s grave.
Overall, there are many possibilities of the events that lead up to that scene. Fans will learn the truth behind it when Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens in theaters next month, on July 31.
