South Africa will be without spearhead Kagiso Rabada for the first Test against Australia in Durban, which begins on October 9, 2026. Captain Temba Bavuma confirmed the news while announcing a reshaped South Africa playing XI that leans on a dual-spin strategy and the return of Anrich Nortje.
Rabada was ruled out of the series opener after failing to fully recover from a hamstring injury sustained during winter training. Bavuma noted that the team management opted for a conservative approach, allowing the fast bowler more time to reach full fitness rather than risking him in the first match of the series. The pace attack is further depleted by the absence of Lungi Ngidi, who is also sidelined with a hamstring issue.
The Proteas' pace attack will be led by the returning .
The void left by Rabada and Ngidi will be filled by Anrich Nortje, who returns to the Test arena for the first time since March 2023. Nortje’s last appearance in the longest format was against the West Indies, and his return provides South Africa with the express pace needed to challenge the Australian top order. He will be supported by Marco Jansen and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder in the seam department.
Tactical Shift to Twin Spin
In a notable tactical departure for a venue traditionally associated with pace and bounce, South Africa has named two specialist spinners for the Kingsmead clash. Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer have both been included in the XI, suggesting the Proteas expect the Durban surface to offer significant assistance to the slower bowlers as the match progresses.
This match marks Australia’s first Test tour of South Africa since 2018. The series carries heavy weight in the World Test Championship standings, where South Africa currently sits in second place, trailing only the top-ranked Australians. A strong performance in Durban is critical for South Africa’s ambitions to secure a spot in the final.
The confirmed South African XI features a settled batting lineup, with Ryan Rickelton continuing at the top and Tristan Stubbs maintaining his place in the middle order. Kyle Verreynne will take the gloves as the designated wicketkeeper.
