Sony’s PS Plus Upgrade Offer Criticized for Being ‘Misleading’

PS Plus upgrade

Sony‘s rolling out a new PS Plus Essential to Premium upgrade offer to select users, and it’s not exactly what you think. Players are being sent redemption codes via PS5 pop-up notifications for what appears to be a deal, but it actually isn’t one.

New PS Plus Essential to Premium upgrade offer isn’t a ‘deal’

A little bit of context first. PS Plus Premium is twice the price of PS Plus Essential, and players can upgrade from lower tiers at any point in time. It’s no surprise, then, that players thought they were selected for a discount when they received pop-up notifications with voucher codes specifically called an upgrade offer at no additional cost.

Here’s the fine print: What you’re getting is a straight-up conversion — nothing more, nothing less. So, if you have 12 months of Essential, you’ll be converted to six months of Premium. If you have six months of Essential left, you’ll be converted to three months of Premium, and so on.

I’ve already spotted dozens of threads on Reddit alone, with unsuspecting players complaining that they didn’t realize that they weren’t getting a deal, and have ended up with far fewer months of a subscription than they had before claiming the offer. Many say that if the wording had been clearer, they wouldn’t have redeemed the code and kept their Essential membership, which would have lasted twice as long as their new Premium upgrade.

While one can argue that everyone should read the fine print, it’s hard to deny that the offer is misleading at first glance. Sending players console pop-ups with voucher codes and calling it an “upgrade offer at no additional cost” doesn’t sit right. It’s not until players attempt to redeem the code that Sony labels it a “conversion.”

Comments in these threads are littered with the same complaints.

If you’ve redeemed the code and don’t intend to keep renewing your Premium subscription, we advise turning off auto-renew immediately. Doing so will not cancel your existing membership, although that’s what the cancellation message may lead one to believe.
