Shonda Rhimes has revealed she had to fight to make sure Grey's Anatomy had a diverse cast. Since the show premiered in 2005, Grey's Anatomy has focused on the employees and patients of the fictional Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. The first series in Rhimes' shows that are collectively known as the Shondaland franchise, it has been a massive success.
