Seth MacFarlane Confirms How a Family Guy Movie Can Happen

Seth MacFarlane just revealed the one condition that needs to happen before he greenlights a Family Guy movie. The creator laid out his plans for the franchise’s future during a recent podcast appearance.

Seth MacFarlane recently spoke about the possibility of a Family Guy movie during an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast.

The creator confirmed he has a clear vision for the film. He stated, “The Family Guy feature film is something that’s still always in the back of my head. I’ve always had a pretty clear idea of what it’s going to be. It’s that arrow in the quiver that I keep for when everything else goes to s—.”

MacFarlane also revealed a specific condition for when the movie would happen. He tied it directly to a potential professional setback. He explained, “I always kind of assume that if I have a really dismal professional failure, like I produce a movie or a show that just fails so badly, the only thing that can cleanse the palette of the audience is the Family Guy movie. That’s when I’ll do it.”

When asked whether the movie could happen while the series still airs, MacFarlane confirmed it could. Family Guy currently sits in its 24th season on Fox. The show continues to perform strongly in streaming, accumulating over 60 billion minutes streamed. MacFarlane also received the Streaming Icon Award for that milestone.

Meanwhile, the franchise already expands beyond the flagship series. Fox and Hulu have ordered a two-season spinoff centring on Stewie Griffin. MacFarlane co-created the spinoff with longtime collaborator Kirker Butler. The new series reportedly premieres in 2027.

Despite declining live viewership from its early peaks, Family Guy remains a streaming powerhouse. Season 24 averaged around 600,000 to 700,000 live viewers per episode. However, the show consistently ranks among the top five most-streamed animated programs per Nielsen rankings.

MacFarlane also expressed continued surprise at the show’s enduring popularity after 25 years on television.
