The NCIS franchise expanded its footprint into the Northeast with the premiere of NCIS: New York on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The seventh spinoff in the long-running procedural universe marks a significant transition for Senior Special Agent Sam Hanna, played by LL Cool J, as the character moves from his long-standing West Coast roots to anchor a new field office in his hometown.
Occupying the 9 p.m. ET time slot on CBS, the series serves as the centerpiece of a restructured “NCIS Tuesday” block. This new iteration is led by showrunner Byron Balasco.
returns to his roots to investigate a personal case in the series pilot.
A Personal Homecoming for Sam Hanna
The pilot episode immediately establishes a more personal tone than previous entries in the franchise. Rather than a standard military investigation, the story begins with Sam Hanna returning to New York City to probe the death of a lifelong friend and Navy reservist, Jack Halloway. While the NYPD initially ruled Halloway’s death a suicide, Hanna’s refusal to accept that conclusion drives the initial formation of the New York task force.
The series is filmed on location in New York City. According to TVLine’s premiere recap, the series utilizes the city’s geography as more than just a backdrop, integrating specific neighborhood dynamics into the investigative process.
The shift to New York also introduces a new partnership dynamic. Scott Caan co-stars as NCIS Special Agent Nick Schaeffer, a character described as “roguish” whose methods frequently clash with Hanna’s disciplined approach. This pairing serves as a stylistic departure from the legendary partnership Hanna shared with G. Callen during his years in Los Angeles, offering a fresh friction that anchors the new team.
The New York Field Office Cast
Beyond the lead duo, the series fills out the New York field office with a mix of veteran authority and unconventional expertise. Jennifer Beals stars as Robyn Wells, the Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge (ASAC), who must navigate the political complexities of operating a federal agency within the jurisdiction of the NYPD. According to official production details from Paramount Press Express, Wells acts as the strategic shield for Hanna’s team as they establish their presence in the city.
The technical side of the team is handled by Devin Druid, who plays Sean Sullivan. In a departure from the typical high-tech lab setting, Sullivan is a technical operator working off a legal sentence after hacking a police pension fund. His “outsider” status provides a different perspective on digital forensics compared to the franchise’s traditional tech roles.
The new series introduces an unconventional technical operator to the NCIS team.
The series arrives following Sam Hanna’s nomadic period, which included a recurring role in NCIS: Hawai’i. By grounding the character in a permanent location with deep personal stakes, NCIS: New York attempts to evolve the character’s backstory while maintaining the procedural structure that has defined the brand for over two decades. Showrunner Balasco has leaned into the grit of the city to distinguish this spinoff from the sun-drenched aesthetics of the Los Angeles and Hawai’i iterations.
