Sega has announced that it will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Sakura Wars series in 2026. The company added that it will gradually publish details about new merchandise and events that it will launch to mark the celebrations.
Even though Sega made this announcement on April 1, 2026, we can confirm that this is completely legit and it is not an April Fool's Day prank. This is because the Japanese community has a tradition of sharing April Fool's jokes before noon, and Sega published this announcement news and tweet right after noon at 12:01 PM JST.
The first Sakura Wars game appeared as a strategy RPG for Sega Saturn in Japan on September 27, 1996. The series' latest console entry, which came out first in Japan as Shin Sakura Taisen / New Sakura Wars in 2019 and then localized in English as Sakura Wars, is an action game readily available worldwide on PlayStation 4.
Shortly after this release, Sega also launched Sakura Revolution as the series' new free-to-play mobile game in December 2020. However, the mobile game did not last long as it shut down after roughly over seven months in July 2021.
The 30th anniversary day for the Sakura Wars series will officially fall on September 27, 2026. Sega has so far only announced merchandise and events to celebrate the anniversary, so it is yet to be known whether the company is preparing a new game release for the series or not.
