The world is on fire and an angry idiot toddler maniac “no new wars” president is hurtling us into senseless wars and upending nearly a century of world order… But just in the nick of time, Mama Ru is here to make us laugh — hallelujah!! Behold: the first teaser trailer for Stop! That! Train!, a comedy thriller drama disaster film that stars RuPaul Charles as Madame President Gagwell (lol, no notes on the name). What’s the plot? I don’t know, something about a train that needs to be stopped. That’s not why I’m here! The train scenario is just a vehicle (thank you, thank you) for us to enjoy Ru flanked by a bevy of former Drag Race contestants (she’s always bringing her girls in) and a plethora of top notch cameos rounding out the rest of the cast. Plus the whole thing is helmed by Adam Shankman, who directed Hairspray (the musical adaptation, obviously, not National Treasure John Waters). So without any further ado, Start! That! Trailer! for Stop! That! Train!
Bleecker Street and World of Wonder have released the first trailer for the action-comedy “Stop That Train!”
Directed by Adam Shankman, “Stop That Train!” stars RuPaul as President Gagwell who has to save the day. “Drag Race” alumni lead the cast. Best friends Tess (Ginger Minj) and DeeDee (Jujubee) play train stewardesses who trade their dreary shifts on the Stank Rail for the glitzy Glamazonian Express.
When a catastrophic “Stormaganza” threatens to derail the high-speed train and crash it into Los Angeles, the duo in coach must join forces with the snobby first class attendants (Raven-Symone, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Marcia Marcia Marcia) to save the day. Matt Rogers, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Rachel Bloom, Lisa Rinna and Nicole Richie also star in the film.
In the trailer, Madam President Gagwell asks for an update on the situation and is informed that the Glamazonian Express is “headed into a massive storm.” When she responds, “Tell it to me gay,” the camera cuts to Rogers who gasps aloud. As the stewardesses board the Glamazonian Express and tell passengers “there’s no need to panic,” chaos ensues, and “Carmina Burana: O Fortuna,” better known as the theme from “The Omen,” plays.
Gellar plays herself in the film, appearing as a passenger aboard the doomed Glamazonian Express. The trailer shows a clip of her sitting in her first class seat when another passenger approaches and asks, not if she’s Sarah Michelle Gellar, but “Are you sitting in my seat? I paid for the window.”
The film is produced by World of Wonder, Universal Pictures Content Group and Bleecker Street, and written by Connor Wright and Christina Friel. Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, Tom Campbell, RuPaul Charles and Shankman serve as producers. Unapologetic Projects is an executive producer and financier on the project.
“Stop That Train” was filmed in Los Angeles and will arrive in theaters on June 12.
Needless to say, I’m all in on this movie. While I love a clever repartee or the craftsmanship of comedy built on fierce intelligence, the older I get, the more value I find in really really really really dumb humor. And god save the drag queens, was there ever a lot of dumb humor going on in this trailer! I say that with love! The gag where the aides kept piling more and more objects into President Gagwell’s arms did me in, and when they got to the bowling pin I was gone. Another standout moment was Jujubee saying, “I was born with adult teeth.” I almost hope we don’t get any further context. Also, we got to hear Mama Ru laugh in this trailer, and she has a fabulously infectious laugh. It’s like a yawn — anyone who hears it can’t help but join in! So yass queen, I’m fully on board (train pun!), and June 12 can’t come soon enough. Now if only we could disembark the runaway disaster train that is our current reality…
