Stranger Things turned David Harbour into a star, but the actor was ready to just walk away from Netflix‘s hit series. The acclaimed actor has now revealed the reason why.

What did David Harbour say about leaving Stranger Things?

David Harbour played the now-iconic role of Jim Hopper, the chief-of-police in Hawkins. His character appeared in all five seasons of Stranger Things before the Netflix series concluded with its finale in December 2025.

In an interview with Variety, Harbour revealed that once the show ended, he wanted to move on from it permanently. “At a certain point,” he said, “you kind of run out of story. We had gone as far with these characters as we could, and we were starting to, in a subtle way, repeat beats.”

Had there been an extension of the series, it seems Harbour would have simply ignored it, going by his latest revelation. Fortunately for him, the actor found his next big project in DTF St. Louis.

The dark comedy mini-eries premiered earlier this year on HBO. In the show, Harbour played Floyd Smernitch, an American Sign Language interpreter. Besides him, Jason Bateman as Clark, Linda Cardellini as Carol, Joy Sunday as Jodie, and Richard Jenkins as Detective Donoghue were also seen in key roles.

Next up, Harbour will be seen in an upcoming thriller movie, titled Evil Genius, alongside Courteney Cox. She is also directing the project, which began filming in November 2025. It also features Patricia Arquette, Michael Chernus, Gregory Alan Williams, Ryan Eggold, Owen Teague, and Harlow Jane in crucial roles. The story of Evil Genius focuses on the infamous real-life “pizza bomber” case. The film has yet to receive an official release date window.

Later this year, Harbour will also appear in the highly awaited MCU movie Avengers: Doomsday. He will reprise his popular role of Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian.
