Robert Pattinson and Zendaya’s promotion for The Drama has been really interesting at times. Despite rumors to the contrary, they seem to get along very well. I would even argue that they bring out the “dork” in one another. Some of their best promotional moments are when Zendaya and Rob are together and talking about relationships and weddings. Rob has opinions! He’s not whiffing on these questions at all, and as it turns out, he sort of has good instincts when it comes to intimate partnerships and relationships. Z and Rob did the New York Times podcast, and they tried to answer the question of “how much do you need to know about your partner’s past before you get married?”

Together, they have a chummy and sweetly conspiratorial dynamic. They’ve got a playful debate going about how much you need to know before committing to someone.

Mr. Pattinson came down on the side of less is more: “I think if you’re expecting chaos and surprises, you’ll probably be happier in the long run,” he said. “I think you kind of suffocate a relationship if you’re saying, I need to know everything about your past. The past has nothing to do with you.”

Zendaya was ready with her rebuttal: “I feel like I’m biased because I’ve been able to grow up with the person that I love and get to know them, through being literally a teenager to now,” she told me. “But in life, naturally, we’re going to grow and we’re going to change no matter what. So it’s good to know someone, at least at the core, so that as they grow and as they change, you can be a part of that in some way. It’s like, you know where we’re coming from.”

“The past has nothing to do with you” is such an evolved perspective. That’s how some people feel, truly – like, they don’t want to know about their partner’s ex-lovers or their biggest f–kups, not because they’re uncaring but because they want to live in the present and plan for the future. Zendaya’s perspective is valid too – I would imagine she and Tom know everything about each other and know each other’s stories and histories backwards and forwards. And that works for a lot of people too! There’s no right answer!

Incidentally, I wanted to post this promo, where Z, Rob and Alana Haim are giving advice to people who called in and left messages. This is so ‘90s Loveline, and I learned that Rob would have been an excellent Loveline host. Is it because he has sisters? Or does he just like talking to women and giving them advice?
