Resident Evil Star Avoided Milla Jovovich Movies for One Simple Reason

Zach Cherry stars in the new Resident Evil reboot, which stormed into theaters this past weekend and became the biggest opening in the franchise’s history. But before he signed on, Cherry had never watched a single Resident Evil movie, including any of the six featuring Milla Jovovich, because the horror got to him.

Ahead of the release, Cherry revealed just how much he had steered clear of the property before joining it. When asked how many prior adaptations he had watched before shooting his role, he answered: “Zero. I’m a scaredy-cat. I had not watched any of them.”

The same held true for the games that started it all. Whether he had ever picked up a controller for the series came up next, and the actor admitted, “No, they were too scary for me. They were.” Zach Cherry hadn’t even caught his own film yet at the time of the conversation. He planned to see Resident Evil for the first time later that night: “No, I’m going to see it tonight for the first time. I’m very, very excited.”

As for whether the screening might rattle him, Cherry referred to a recent shift in his viewing habits: “In the last three years I’ve started watching horror, so I think I’ll be okay, especially because I have read the script. So that will help.”

None of that squeamishness, however, had anything to do with why he took the role in the first place. What actually drew him in was the man behind the camera. On landing the part, Cherry said his decision came down to loyalty to director: “I love Zach’s stuff, you know, and so I was just like really excited to do anything that he was doing. And I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

That loyalty appears to have paid off. Helmed by Zach Cregger and co-written by Cregger with Shay Hatten, the reboot pulled in roughly $60 million domestically over its opening weekend, blowing past Sony’s early projections and toppling the previous series high of $26.65 million set by Resident Evil: Afterlife back in 2010. Rather than continuing the story told across the Jovovich-led films and the 2021 reboot Welcome to Raccoon City, Cregger built an entirely original tale set within the same game-inspired world.
