Curious about how Sony’s Resident Evil ending wraps up its tense, zombie-filled nightmare? The final act delivers a desperate race against infection, a gruesome transformation, and a potentially lost cure that could doom Raccoon City. With Bryan’s mission complete but his body succumbing to the t-Virus, the ending leaves humanity’s survival hanging in the balance.

Here is the Resident Evil ending explained, covering Bryan’s fate and what happens to the cure.

Resident Evil ending reveals what Bryan was delivering to Raccoon City

Bryan carries a medical transport bag he initially believes contains an organ for delivery. Two Umbrella Corporation employees later reveal the bag holds a substance vital to producing a cure. The zombie virus, known as the t-Virus, was Umbrella’s own accidental creation. They need Bryan’s cargo to synthesize a cure for the National Guard to distribute. One employee hints at top-secret government work but gets cut off before elaborating further.

Bryan eventually reaches Raccoon City General Hospital after a brutal journey on foot. He navigates a zombie-filled parking garage, a collapsing elevator, and a nightmarish maternity ward. Scientists inside the lab take his sample and begin synthesizing the cure immediately.

Does Bryan die in Resident Evil’s cliffhanger ending?

Bryan does not technically die, but he loses himself entirely to the virus. A zombie girl bit him inside a dark tunnel earlier, and the infection spreads throughout the film. By the time scientists begin working, his arm has already started transforming visibly.

His body suddenly sprouts tentacles that attack the scientists before anyone can administer the cure. Bryan transforms into a massive creature resembling William Birkin’s mutated form from the games. The newly synthesized cure falls from the sky bridge, plummeting over 20 stories to the ground below. The film never reveals whether the vial survives the impact.

Director Zach Cregger has expressed interest in continuing the story beyond this film. “I can’t help thinking about other places this story could go,” he told The Playlist. No sequel has been officially confirmed yet, and no post-credits scene teases future installments. The movie features no characters from the Resident Evil games, instead following Bryan’s original story. With the cure potentially lost, the door remains open for a follow-up.
